The Dhofar coast where the green hills meet a pale beach and the Arabian Sea

Living

Living in Salalah

Salalah is the capital of Dhofar and the second city of Oman — a port, a free zone, an international airport, and a coastline that behaves like nowhere else on the Peninsula.

The city

Low-rise, spread along a coastal plain, with an escarpment behind it and the Empty Quarter beyond that. Frankincense came from here; Wadi Dawkah's groves and the port at Khor Rori are UNESCO-listed as the Land of Frankincense, along with Al Baleed on the edge of the city.

Salalah International Airport connects to the Gulf and beyond. The Port of Salalah is one of the world's busiest transshipment ports, and the Salalah Free Zone sits behind it — which is why the city has a year-round working economy rather than only a season.

Climate

Two modes. Khareef, roughly 21 June to 21 September, is cool, green and cloudy — the inverse of the Gulf summer. The rest of the year is warm, dry and clear.

Living inside an ITC

For a non-GCC national, an Integrated Tourism Complex is not only where ownership is legally possible — it is a different day-to-day proposition. Mira Ocean Estates is a serviced community: a 130-key five-star hotel supplying concierge and housekeeping, a waterfront beach club, a medical wellness centre and spa, a central pool, a gym, walking paths and playgrounds.

Salalah International Airport is twenty-five minutes away; the Hawana Salalah marina is adjacent.

Common questions

What is Salalah like to live in?
A low-rise coastal city with an international airport, a major port and a free zone, a UNESCO archaeological landscape, and a three-month monsoon season that inverts the usual Gulf climate.
Can foreigners live in Salalah?
Yes. Ownership for non-GCC nationals is restricted to Integrated Tourism Complexes, and ownership above defined thresholds carries residency.
How far is the airport?
Twenty-five minutes from Mira Ocean Estates.
